Leadership Sandusky County and The Fremont Rotary Club
co-sponsored a “Summer Social” at the home of Laurie and
Mike Sistrunk on Thursday, July 14 from 5:30pm-7:30pm.
The event was well attended by both groups, and all enjoyed
the beautiful home and setting of the hosts. The after-work
event gave attendees a chance to visit with friends,
co-workers, and new acquaintances. Please find pictures

LEADERSHIP GRADUATES 2Oth CLASS and PRESENTS THE COMMUNITY
TRUSTEE OF THE YEAR AWARD
Leadership Sandusky County
celebrated the graduation of its 20th class on
Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at Ole Zim’s Wagon Shed. LSC Board
Chair, Margaret Weisz welcomed everyone, and the invocation
was given by Pastor Dave Gowen (LSC Class of 2010). After
the meal LSC Director, Candace Seaman, introduced LSC alumni
and sponsors. The classes of 2007 and 2010 tied for having
the most alumni attend this event.
The Community Trustee of the
Year Award for 2011 was then presented to Dennis
Newman of Fremont for his dedication and tireless
service on several boards at Fremont Memorial Hospital.
Rotary President Jim Ellis read Mr. Newman’s biography, and
Lisa Edris, Community Trustee of 2010, presented him with an
engraved clock. This honor is given jointly each year, by
Fremont Rotary Club and Leadership Sandusky County.
Nominees for this award were gathered from the community,
and then voted on by the Leadership Class. The three other
worthy nominees included David Wadsworth for his
service on the Sandusky County Regional Airport Authority,
JoAnne McDowell for her service to the Sandusky
County Humane Society, and Jason Conklin for his
service on the Lindsay Volunteer Fire Department Board.
Youth Leadership Sandusky County
committee member and LSC Vice Chair, Holly Stacy, gave a
brief summary of the Youth program. Graduates from the
youth class of 2011, Alexis Lindenberger and Jenna Wurzel,
each spoke on their experience in YLSC and explained the
service projects that their teams performed at Elmwood
Nursing Home and Village House, respectively.
The three teams from the adult class
then came forward and gave a presentation on their service
projects, which benefited Buckeye Council of Campfire (Misty
Meadows), First Step Healthy Family Resource Center in
Fostoria, and Liberty Center of Fremont.
Individual certificates of
completion were then presented by Ms. Seaman to the
twenty-one graduates:

The evening concluded with the announcement of the Silent

Press Releases from Leadership Sandusky County (September
2010 through May 2011)
The Leadership Sandusky County program is underway for the
2010-2011 year. The Class of 2011, which is the 20th
Leadership class, started its year on September 1, with
Orientation and continued with the first class session at
the Fremont Community Recreation Center on September 15. The
theme was Team Building and Community Service. The class
performed team building exercises, and then heard
presentations from area non-profit organizations outlining
their requests for future projects. Joyce Garvey (First Call
for Help) gave the group an overview of the needs, in
general, of Sandusky County. The class, which is divided
into three teams, worked on selecting area non-profits to
assist and started to formulate plans to accomplish this
assistance.

The October 20th session’s theme was Agriculture and
Entrepreneurship. It started at Sunrise Co-op, with George
Secor, CEO of Sunrise, giving the history and development of
the company. The class then toured the John Riehm farm and
learned about their operation and their CSA program. Dave
Hasselbach of Hassebach Meats explained his company, as well
as the new wind turbine installed there to help with energy
costs. Jill Gray, owner of Bloom flower and gift shop spoke
to the group about starting a small business and the
challenges it holds. Dan Polter, area farmer and Sandusky
County Commissioner and Holly Stacy, CEO of the Sandusky
County Chamber of Commerce, then took the class through an
exercise on buying and running a farm. The final event for
the day was a tour of Streaker Tractor Sales, given by Greg
Streaker, which included the company’s history and
operation.

Leadership Sandusky County’s Class of 2011 had an
educational day on November 17 when they completed a
“Treasure Hunt for Government”. The theme for this session
was Government and Effective Communication.
The class of 21 was divided into six teams, and had to
communicate with each other and decipher clues which were
found at five locations around Fremont. The clues ultimately
brought them to the office of an elected county official.
Each clue answered questions on the duties of the official.
The Sandusky County officials included: Colleen Carmack (SC
Recorder), Tracy Overmyer (SC Clerk of Courts), John Rettig,
Dan Polter and Terry Thatcher (SC Commissioners), Jim Moyer
(SC Engineer), Tom Stierwalt (SC Prosecutor), and Irma
Celestino (SC Treasurer). After re-grouping at the Sandusky
County Economic Development office, each class member
communicated information to the class about their official.
After lunch, class members assembled in their three teams to
work on their class projects, which will benefit three area
non-profit organizations. A panel discussion was then held
which also included questions from the class. Those involved
in the panel included: Fremont Mayor Terry Overmyer, SC EDC
Executive Director Kay Reiter, and Judge Brad Smith. Book
reports on selected leadership topics were delivered by
three of the class members.

The class of 2011 of Leadership Sandusky County (LSC) met on
December 15, 2010 at Fremont Memorial Hospital for their
session on Boardsmanship, Governance, and Leadership.
Speakers included CEO John Yanes, VP for Organizational
Development Karla Falls and CFO Rick Ruppel all from
Memorial Healthcare, and Mary Gallagher from the Ohio
Hospital Association. Students learned tools for meeting
facilitators and teams, general boardsmanship and
governance, how to read financial statements, and how to be
an effective leader. The day also included a tour of the ER
and the new Women’s Center. The session was planned and
facilitated by LSC Board Member Chasity O’Neill. After the
session, the class attended the Holiday Reception at the
Hayes Center, sponsored by the Sandusky County Chamber of
Commerce and Leadership Sandusky County.

The Leadership Sandusky County Class of 2011 had its latest
session on January 19, 2011 at The Whirlpool Corporation in
Clyde, Ohio. The themes for the day were Business & Economic
Development, and Diversity. The Clyde story of Whirlpool was
presented by Bill Townsend of Whirlpool. Speakers on
economic development
included Clyde City Manager Paul Fiser, Adam Greenslade
Director of Clydescope, and Kay Reiter, Sandusky County
Economic Development Director. The class enjoyed a tour of
the plant, followed by an informative talk on Diversity in
the Workplace, presented by Attorney Tom Dixon of Eastman &
Smith. The session was planned by LSC Board of Trustee
members Carol Wasserman, and Dave O’Neal, both Whirlpool
employees and LSC alumni. The class is divided into teams to
perform service projects for area non-profit organizations,
apart from the class sessions. This year’s non-profit
recipients include: First Step Domestic Violence Shelter,
Liberty Center, and Buckeye Council of Campfire.

The February
session for the Leadership Sandusky County Class of 2011 was
held at the YMCA in Fremont on February 16, 2011. The
themes for the day were Health and Human Services and
Personal Well-Being. The day was planned by Leadership
Board Trustees Barb Mason (Elmwood Centers) and Henri Martin
(Wal-Mart), both alumni of the Leadership program.
The session
started with Rebecca Holland (Sandusky County Department of
Health) giving a powerpoint presentation on tabulated county
health statistics and their impact on Sandusky County. Bev
Hart, Spiritual Director for Memorial Healthcare Hospice
explained the Hospice program and ended with stories of her
recent relief trip to Haiti. Jeff Reed (Sandusky Bay
Goodwill) informed the group on the many facets of the
Goodwill organization, and then Sister Margaret of Our Lady
of the Pines took the group through a personal meditation
excercise, and stressed the importance of taking care of
oneself. After lunch, Denise Reiter (YMCA) and two other
staff members divided up the class and took them on a tour
of the YMCA. After the tour,
United Way Director Abby Slemmer gave a presentation on the
United Way, and how it impacts Sandusky County. The day
ended with a rousing session of Zumba, led by instructor
Lisa Shuey.
Time was
also spent by the class listening to four book reports, and
discussing their upcoming service projects. Team 3 (Trlblzrs)
will be having an Ash Wednesday Fish Fry (carry-out
only) on March 9, 2011 at The Willows in Bellevue from
11:30am-1:00pm. Meals include Lake Erie Perch, fries, slaw,
drink and dessert for $8. Delivery will be made for orders
of eight or more dinners. For more information, or to RSVP

Liberty Center Homeless Shelter. Teams 1 (SOS) and 2
(Communicators) are doing upcoming projects to support
Buckeye Council of Campfire and First Step Domestic Violence

The
Leadership Class of 2011 started its March session on
Education at the new McPherson Middle School in Clyde on
March 16, 2011. Morning speakers included: math teacher
Brian Hill, who informed the class on new technologies in
education available to teachers; Clyde-Green Springs
Superintendent Greg Elchert, who explained the intricacies
in school funding, as related to governmental policies;
Principal Jon Detwiler, who explained the new facility to
the class, while conducting a tour; and Clyde-Green Springs
School Psychologist Mark Bromley, Ed.S., who covered the
topic of “Knowing your Objectives and Achieving Them”.
After
lunch, which was provided by First Financial Bank, the Class
traveled to Terra Community College and was welcomed by Dr.
Marsha Bordner, President of Terra. Michael Shirtz,
instructor of fine arts/music, presented a talk on the
Effect of Arts on Education. The remainder of the afternoon
was spent with Dr. Jerold Thomas, OSU Leadership Center, who
explained and then discussed with the class, the
ever-changing world of Social Media (Facebook and Twitter).
Before dismissal, book reports were presented by four class
members. The next LSC session will be April 20 on Law
Enforcement and Conflict Resolution.

The theme of the April
session of Leadership Sandusky County was Law Enforcement.
The day started at the Sheriff’s Department on April 20,
2011 with breakfast provided by Parkview Care Center. A
tour of the jail, the department’s communications center,
and the Juvenile Detention Center followed. Members of the
class enjoyed lunch provided by Holland CPA, and then
discussed the nominees and the voting procedure for the
Community Trustee of the Year Award, with Rotary President
Jim Ellis. The class voted on the nominees, and the winner
will be announced at the LSC Graduation Banquet on June 15.
John Glass, Sandusky County
Dog Warden, then gave a tour of his facility and explained
his position and it’s duties to the class. Conflict
resolution was addressed in various formats, including talks
from Fremont Police Chief Wiersma and Fremont Fire Chief
Foos. Book reports were given by Nathaniel (JP) Poe, Kyle
Overmyer, and Randy McCullough.
The final session of
Leadership Sandusky County will be the day-long Bus Tour of
the county on May 18. For more information on the

Leadership Sandusky County
had its final class session, a bus tour of Sandusky County,
on May 18, 2011. The stops and their respective speakers
included: the Sandusky County Regional Airport (Craig
Durnwald), Bellevue Society for the Arts (John Meyers),
Elmwood at the Springs (Jean Smith and staff), White Star
Park (Steve Gruner), Williams Park and Haven’s Sculpture
Studio in Gibsonburg (Jim Havens and Tony Picciuto), Lindsey
Methodist Church (Mayor Rod Opelt), and Flag Park in
Woodville (Mayor Rich Harman, Police Chief Roy Whitehead and
Village Administrator Keith Kruse). Tour guide was John
Roush, who narrated interesting points about Sandusky County
during the bus ride. Lunch and snacks were provided by
Clyde-Findlay Area Credit Union. The session was organized
by Leadership Sandusky County Trustees Margaret Weisz and
Emily Eisenhauer.
The Class of 2011 will
celebrate its graduation on June 15 at Ole Zim’s Wagon Shed
with a banquet and program. Presentations will be given by
the three class teams on their projects which supported
Liberty Center, Buckeye Council of Campfire, and First Step
Domestic Violence Shelter. The recipient of the Community
Trustee of the Year Award for 2011, who was selected by the
class, will be announced during the program. A Silent
Auction will also be held. Alumni of Leadership Sandusky
County, as well as the public, are invited to attend. The
Leadership Class of 2012 is being organized. The

The 3rd Annual “Hacker’s Classic” Golf Outing of Leadership
Sandusky County was held Friday, May 20, 2011 at River Cliff
Golf Course in Fremont. After the course was completed,
proximity prizes were awarded, as well as “Last Place Team”
(Downtown Fremont) and “First Place Team” (Phil’s Boys).
Door prizes were given out, the 50/50 drawing winner was
announced, and a meal was enjoyed. Closing remarks and
acknowledgments were given by committee chair, Phyllis
Whitehead.
